4Great helmet, great value!
By Philip
I've been riding for about 15 years, and in that time I've used HJC, Bieffe, AGV, and most recently a Shoei. My Shoei was getting a bit long in the tooth (I consider 3 years a good service life for a helmet, 5 with very careful handling - my Shoei was at about 4.5). I saw the graphics on this helmet, read and watched a couple of reviews, and figured for $100 I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did.

Somehow, I missed the fact that this is matte finished helmet. No big deal, but I wanted to make that clear. Speaking of clear, the smoked visor that's often shown on this helmet is an option; the helmet comes with a clear visor.

The materials and build quality are very high; I don't see how the Shoei (for which I paid almost 4 times as much) I was using is any better. The cloth on the (removable) liner is very nice, and feels very comfortable. The plastic on the vents feels solid and durable, and the fit on the closed vents is very good. The top vent is either fully open or fully closed. The bottom vent has three positions; closed, half open, and fully open. I'm not sure how well the venting works yet; the weather will have to warm up a lot before I can really tell (it's February now). The face shield has four positions, from fully closed to fully open (with two in between to make four). The detents for those positions are very solid. I don't see the face shield shifting once you've set it at your chosen position. Removing the face shield is very easy, and I see no evidence of the loose screw issue mentioned in another Amazon review of this helmet. I did get a little bit of whistle from the visor area around 55 mph. I'll keep fiddling with that and see if it goes away. There are vents on the front and back of the helmet that cannot be closed and have wire mesh inside them. I can't tell if the ones in back are functional or decorative, but the ones on the chin bar seem to be connected to a pair of round holes on the inside of the chin bar. The chin strap's D ring closure works fine and has a snap to keep the loose end from whipping around... loose.

In person, the graphics on the helmet look very good from 5 or 10 feet away. You can tell they were going for a custom airbrushed look, and they did pretty well in that respect. Up close, the printing of the nose art girl isn't perfect. She's got a bit of white border here, and some over"spray" there where her hair color, for example, isn't quite aligned and covers a bit of the "metal panels." You can see this is some of the pictures I've uploaded. If you know a real airbrush artist, don't show him/her this helmet. For just about everyone else (myself included), it's a great looking helmet.

A word on fit; I take about a 7 3/8 to 7 1/2 size hat, so I ordered a Large. That's the right size for me in HJC and Shoei, and Large was right for me with this Bell. It fits perfectly. The outer shell of the helmet is a bit wider than my Shoei, so if you're one of those people who thinks the safety device protecting your brain should be as small as possible (??), then be aware that this isn't a tiny helmet.

One nice feature I wasn't expecting is the presence of speaker pockets in the ear spaces. You know, I was going to give this helmet four stars, but now that I list all this and remember that it only cost $100, I think it's got to get five!

Update; I've been riding with this helmet for about six months now, several thousand miles. The vents are... limited in their usefulness. I've ridden in hot weather, cold weather, hot weather with a head wet from a shower, etc., and I've never really felt significant air flow. So this might not be the best choice for hot weather riding. In fact, the vents are so useless that I'm going to have to downgrade this to four stars.

This helmet is well worth the price. Though the picture shows tinted visor, it is not. That is another option, so don't expect that when you order.

5One of the best helmets I've ever purchased.

It's a great quality helmet for the price I paid. I'm a huge fan of World War 2 planes and I feel like it fit the description. I plan on getting my bike painted the same way.
